Could you please help me? I\'d like to now, which is the top CPU that fits into an ASUS P2L97 mainboard.
I saw some topics about this, but I can\'t speak german, so it wasn\'t very clear to me.
Is it possible to fit a Cel-766 into the mainboard? With a BIOS upgrade (1010.004) And which Slot1-FCPGA adapter is good for this?

Official the PPGA-Celeron with 533 MHZ is the fastest CPU that can function on the P2L97-Mainboard, but some times ago i made a quite interesting experiment :
I got a P2L97-S-Mainboard for a very short time, and just for fun i upgrades the Bios to the latest version 1010.004 Beta, and then i put a Celeron 600 on a MSI 6905 Ver. 2.3 Master-Adapter @ 1,8 V Vcore into the Mainboard. I expected that the board could not boot, but i was very astonished when the Board started an the CPU was correctly recognized as an Celeron with 600 MHZ !!! I could start the Windows 98 SE without problems and run some applications like Word97 or Netscape 4.7 without failure, but i had no time for an Benchmark or any else performace-tests.
Because of that experience i can make one conclusion :
It is possible to run a coppermine-Celeron on an old LX-Mainboard, but only when two conditions are fulfilled :
1. You need an actual Bios-Update from the Year 2000 or 2001.
2. You need a Slotadapter with Jumpers for the CPU-Voltage, and this VCore-Jumpers you must set to 1,8 V VCore !!
If these conditions are fullfilled, there ist a great chance that you could run any FSB-66 Coppermine-Celeron on your old-fashioned Motherboard. In my empirical knowledge there are three Adapter-Models that would be suitable for this trick : It is the MSI 6905 Ver 2.X Master, the Tekram Rev.2 an the Asus S370-DL. All these adapters have VCore-Jumpers and do not make problems on the P2L97-Mainboards. Keep your fingers away from the Abit Sotket, this model still makes enourmos trouble with these older Asus-Boards !!
Well, you can try it, and normally there is no risk or the CPU or the Mainboard by these experiment. In my opinion you should be successfull, but just as it could not work. Good Luck !!
