Das ist ein virtuelle Massenspeicher, der sich z.B. aus mehreren Festplatten zusammensetzt. Die systemleistung wird erhöht. Je nach Ausfall einer Platte, stehen die Daten trotzdem noch auf einer Spiegelplatte zur Verfügung (außer bei RAid 0, hier muss dann von einem Backup-Medium, wie z.B. einer CD,DVD die Daten zurückkopiert werden).
RAID1 besteht aus 2 Festplatten. eine der Platten hat die Backup oder spiegel-Funktion. Der Inhalt beider Platten ist der selbe.
Raid5-Bestehend aus 5 Fesptlatten, wo unandhängig voneinander die Anwednerdaten gespeichert werden. Es kommt ein höherer Datendurchsatz zustande und durch festlegung bestimmter Sicherheitskriterien ist auch entprechend höhere Sicherheit gewährleistet.
