"This means that the API is more robust, and the DirectDraw core now takes up only 14K compared to the previous 67K chunk. It also means that calls between both 2D and 3D elements are now more effective, but at the expense of some features.

Developers of isometric 3D games that rely heavily on Blts and sprite handling - Sierra's Caesar III or Pharoah, for instance - will now have to adapt to 3D calls to achieve the same ends.

Video handling remains in the capable hands of DX7, however, with no changes made to the current acceleration setup. Where this may cause problems is if developers want to mix DX8 3D acceleration with video streaming - so products such as Matrox's RT2000 video editing kit may well need to steer clear of this new API."
