Versuch mal eine ältere Version. Bei der neuen habe ich auch Probleme ('meine Orte' werden nicht Gespeichert.)
Ich habe ver. 5.0.11733 die funkt. auch mit compiz.

Also Google Earth 5.1.3533.1731 funktioniert einwandfrei.
Wie hast du es denn installiert ?
Du mußt folgende Paketquelle freischalten:
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ karmic free non-free
Damit diese Fremdquelle authentifiziert wird muß man den Signierungsschlüssel mit folgendem Befehl importieren:
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0C5A2783
Danach kannst du Google Earth u. A. mit Synaptic installieren.

Welche Grafikkarte hast Du und welcher Treiber ist installiert?

Meine Grafikkarte ist eine NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS und benütze den von UBUNTU empfohlenen beschleunigter Grafikkartentreiber von NVIDIA (Version 185)

Ich sage nur Linux Standard Base.
Wenn du Fremdsoftware installieren willst, also Programme die mit einer anderen Linuxdistribution erstellt wurden, dann sollte man eine LSB kompatible Linuxdistribution nutzen.
Die Linux Standard Base garantiert eine Binärkompatibilität zwischen den Distributionen, so das die Programmierer ihre Programme nicht ständig an irgendeine Distribution anpassen müssen.
Ich glaube die LSB Kompatibilität ist beim aktuellen Ubuntu nicht so gut.
Als zweite Fehlerquelle kann ich mir vorstellen das der nvidia Treiber noch gar nicht richtig installiert wurde. Hast du deine /etc/X11/xorg.conf Datei angepasst ?
Ist der "nvidia" Treiber in der Datei /etc/X11/xorg.conf auch eingetragen ?
Steht in der Logdatei /var/log/Xorg.0.log das der "nvidia" Treiber genutzt wird ?
Oder wird immer noch der "nv" Treiber genutzt ?

Dann kenne ich nur noch zwei Fehlerquellen.
Entweder es fehlt noch eine Laufzeitbibliothek. Das kann man relativ einfach mit dem ldd Befehl herausbekommen.
Einfach ldd und die dynamisch gelinkte Binärdatei als Parameter angeben.
Beispiel Brennprogramm nero:
ldd nero
Oder Google Earth im Terminalfenster starten. Sollte eine Bibliothek noch fehlen wird das angezeigt.
Oder die Laufzeitbibliothek von Ubuntu ist nicht LSB kompatibel. Google Earth ist wahrscheinlich mit einer anderen Linuxdistribution erstellt worden , die Laufzeitbibliotheken werden aber von Ubuntu genutzt. Wenn die Laufzeitumgebung von Ubuntu nicht mit der anderen Linuxdistribution kompatibel ist, kann es passieren das ein Fremdprogramm unter Ububuntu nicht funktioniert.
Ich weiß das jetzt nicht so genau, aber ich glaube die LSB Kompatibilität ist bei Ubuntu nicht so gut (wie beim originalen Debian). Das aktuelle Debian lenny ist LSB 3.2 kompatibel.
Oder Google Earth hat einen Bug.
Probier einfach mal eine LSB 3.2 kompatible Distribution aus und teste darin Google Earth.

Ein recht herzliches Danke an Alle die versucht haben mir bei diesem Problem zu helfen.
Ich habe Ubuntu 9.10 neu installiert, und jetztr funktioniert Google earth sowie Kaffeine auch.
